Resurrection changed everything

Message: "The Lord & The Sabbath"

The Gospels frequently relate the constant tension between the legalistic Pharisees and Jesus. They dogged His steps and were always looking for a way to trap Him into making a mistake. The Pharisees thought themselves to be the protectors of the faith. They were determined to keep Israel from ever going back into captivity by obeying God's law to the letter. And, in their vigor, they went overboard in their requirements to do that.

Of course, they always thought Jesus was making mistakes because they disagreed with everything He did and stood for. So, it's not unusual for them to be watching Jesus's disciples as well.

Luke, who wasn't one of the twelve disciples, relates a story of just such an encounter with the Pharisees on a particular Sabbath day. Sensing they had something, the Pharisees jumped at the chance to condemn the disciples for breaking the Sabbath. In doing so, they were really attacking Jesus as their leader/teacher.

In just a few verses, Luke shares with us Jesus' response. We shall look at that incident and the companion story that immediately follows. Luke wanted all of us to sense the real difference between what Jesus had to say about the Sabbath and the strict rules of the Pharisees. Distinguishing the difference is important.
